Kinja'd!!!

o_O

How we all doing?

Just found out my fridge probably should be replaced . It’s okay because I’ve already been worn down by the many inconveniences of 2019, so it’s not so bad. Found water dripping though the basement ceiling but was relieved to find it was just the fridge leaking and dripping through what I presume is a hole for the smaller water line of a previous fridge. Why they drilled a new hole directly not to the old and didn’t just bore out the old, I’m not sure. But for the short term, it is a convenient weep hole!

I seem to have fixed the clogged pipe for the discharge on the washing machine, but I remain paranoid, and the Y-pipe drips on the floor because I had to take it apart a half dozen times so it probably needs to be replaced at this point. Small bananas. Ran two loads today and had no apparent problems. Although running the machine while I’m out running errands is now out of the question.

I spent 30 minutes attempting to justify a frivolous vehicle purchase at the tail-end of 2019 or early 2020, and may have mathematically proven that I shouldn’t buy anything until 2021. Foiled again!

I’ve been in 14 states in the last 12 days and I’m ready to be home with my zoo. At least it isn’t raining in Georgia!

Yikes, that’s not great. It could be worse, but it’s never good when a new appliance starts failing. What would the frivolous purchase have been?

I’m okay. Three work days left until the weekend. I’m feeling semi-stressed about work, but hey, I can only do so much.

I understand the work stress thing. Tomorrow is Monday and I’m already thinking of Friday...

What would the purchase have been? I’ve no idea. Every day is new desire. But I simultaneously don’t want to part with anything. I think I just like the euphoria of a new car purchase. It’s SO euphoric that just thinking about it has some simulation to the act itself. This all sounds very dirty doesn’t it.

Yeah, is this adulthood? Most days are just looking forward to other days. I’m already eight months into this current job, and all I do is look forward to anything that isn’t now. It’s... probably not good. Life is going by quickly.

And I get it. The shopping and the thinking about getting something  feels good. We’ll see if that’s true when the new camera comes in that I’ve spent a year and a half thinking about.

I feel your pain. As a test, I cooked 5 chicken breasts—same size—at 4 corners and in the center of my oven. 2 were 120°, one was 135°, one was 160° and one was 183°. I don't want to buy things

It does sound slightly dirty, but I also think it's totally true..  take myself,  will I ever buy an old Kei car?  Honestly,  probably not.   Have I spent much time fantasizing about it like a teenager about that one person they find so attractive but can't approach?  Possibly.

I don’t think I can reply to this effectively without thousands of words.

I have a great lady and have a wonderful [in that I like it but it is a dubious decision] (yet terrifying) home, and it took years of sacrifice to get to this point. I feel very guilty about not loving my job when you consider so many people have much less, not even accounting for the billions of people who have so little it’s incomprehensible for someone like me.

That’s your punishment for attempting to meal prep for the work week. Obviously you should be contributing to the economy by buying an overpriced salad at QFC daily.

Three weeks left in May. At the end, I will either emerge victorious or dead. Possibly both.

Or victoriously deadly, in which you kill other people to celebrate your livelihood.

I may well feel like killing someone at that point. Fortunately for them and for my career, I will most likely not have the energy left.

At the baby shower I was at, the grandfather-to-be is a school teacher, and was going on about his struggles, “They just don’t listen anymore...” He teaches 8th graders. I don’t envy him.

It is hard to get them to listen to you at that age when their hormones are a drum beat in their heads pounding out everything else.

My daughter is having problems with a boy in her class who has been targeting her. The kid is new and probably uncertain and afraid of everything, as most bullies are. Sometimes I’m amazed kids at this age learn anything. But once in a while you can reach them.

I have to teach professional students, and sometimes it’s worse. Too many don’t worry about learning so much as getting the points. But once in a while you can get through to them too.

My teaching is over for the semester though. I have a million dollar equipment grant to get out, another grant I promised to review,  two paper revisions to submit, a PhD student with a committee meeting this week. And a few other things.

That was a good gig, but just a one time thing. Trying to hold out for something I really want to do

First pick right now is a  union apprenticeship to become a commercial electrician. That's what I'm working towards, with varying levels of progress day-to-day

That’s a good career. And frankly this area needs more competent electricians for residential work.

So I hear, on both fronts.

I bet I could wire up a chandelier and get most of the bulbs working

How are you at carpentry? That’s a trade that seems to be recession-proof for the self-employed. Plus it allows you to be handy with work that goes beyond carpentry since a house is so involved.

I enjoy what I do know, but I don’t know a whole lot. I would love to work on that a bit as a side job once I get this main thing figured out, because yeah I want those skills

We could start our own business —

H mm... I bet working long hours would be much more enjoyable with someone else suffering along with you! So I’d rather try the partner route

I’ve got a month left before I gradumatate and I can finally leave behind the last 4 years of hell that has been wedging full-time college into all of my other full-time commitments.

Also, planning our summer vacations. I’m going to be road tripping from Oregon to Wisconsin and back with lots of sight-seeing and overnights on the way back including 2 nights in Yellowstone!!!

I’ll be driving the Suburban... which is currently dumping power steering fluid out of the gearbox faster than I can pour it in. It also needs wheel bearings, a rear main seal, shocks and I’m sure a bunch of other crap since I’ve been completely neglecting it for like, a year and a half... It’ll use a bunch of gas, but on a 5 day road trip with two small kids and a wife, it ain’t gonna be the GLI.

Co oking is a hobby I pursue because it is creative and hands-on but also controllable and immediately rewarding, and both of the latter things my day job extremely is not, so this specific problem is basically an anxiety nightmare come to life for me. I precisely (and deliciously!)  cooked venison steaks hunted and gifted by an acquaintance for dinner tonight  and if one was ruined by basic kitchen equipment it would probably bother me all week.

Hmm how about we trade ovens? Sometimes the greatest creativity comes from self-imposed limits, such as incredibly uneven heating!

How was the venison? I made jerky once and for awhile it was my favorite thing I'd ever tasted.... I need a friend who hunts regularly

It was very good. It’s super lean and can be tough so you have to be gentle with it to get it tender and preserve what little fat it has. I did   80 minutes in a 129-degree sous vide bath with herbs and a little butter, and then finished with a quick sear  in a cast-iron skillet on the grill (with hickory chips for smoke).
